The High Weald is a historic landscape
at the heart of South East England. It is designated as
an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) for its rolling
hills, small, irregular fields, abundant woods and hedges,
scattered farmsteads and sunken lanes.
|
| |
-
A medieval landscape unchanged for five
centuries, created and maintained by traditional farming
-
‘Weald’ means wilderness or
forest and the area has the highest proportion of ancient
woodland in the country.
-
‘Hammer’ ponds provide evidence
of the Wealdon Iron industry, once the largest in the
country with a history going back 2000 years.
