The seven-acre site includes exciting interactive displays that demonstrate the power of wind, water and sun and has working examples of environmentally responsible buildings, energy conservation, organic growing and composting.

The Dyfi Valley is rich in communities, individuals and businesses who have led the way in promoting environmental, economic and cultural sustainability. Today the valley is recognised as the unofficial UK capital of sustainable development. It has become a prosperous rural community, fuelled by wind, water and solar power. It produced foods, arts, crafts and other benefits for the local people.

Your destination

The Dyfi Valley is an area of outstanding natural beauty and internationally significant habitats, with numerous national and local nature reserves. Its most obvious asset is its landscape. The estuary area, including its human and built elements, has been designated as Wales's first biosphere reserve (external link) by UNESCO.

Machynlleth was briefly made the Welsh capital in 1404, when Owain Glyndwr had himself crowned King of a free Wales at Parliament House in Maengwyn Street. But his efforts were thwarted by the English crown. Today the small town is a lively place, full of buildings with character and many shops selling local produce, arts and crafts. There is a Wednesday market and a good selection of shops, bike shops, pubs, Inns and cafes.

  • Beautiful natural landscapes in the Dyfi Valley include: the Tarren escarpment, Aran Mountains, Snowdonia, Ynyslas dunes and Cors Fochno National Nature Reserve, The Pennant valley, peat bog, moorland and deciduous and coniferous forests.
  • Ample walking opportunities using the network of footpaths and forest walks, including the Glyndwr's Way National Trail.
  • Bird watching, especially on the estuary, with Red Kites on the moors and mountains.
  • Cycling using the north-south national cycle Route 8 and a range of mountain bike and leisure cycle ways, including the recently launched Mach 1, 2 and 3 routes.
  • Dinghy sailing and yachting based in Aberdyfi, sea and river angling, including salmon and sea trout fishing on the River Dyfi.
  • Numerous visitor attractions based on a culture and heritage, local crafts and special interest activities such as steam railways. Consult your Discovery Information for the options.
