Opened in 2002, BedZED (standing for ‘Beddington
Zero (fossil) Energy Development’) is a stylish, comfortable,
environmentally friendly, energy-efficient mix of housing
and workspace in Beddington, Sutton in South London.
Find out for yourself how the development incorporates
up-to-the-minute thinking on sustainable living into every
aspect of the scheme, from the energy-efficient design to
the way the houses are heated. BedZED is designed to use
energy from the renewable sources generated on site - it
is the first large-scale community not to add to the amount
of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
BedZED is close to Central London (less than 30 minutes
by train) so why not take in an organic
meal (external link) and a show
in West End (external link) or, if you’d rather
a more rural experience, head away from the city on the
Wandle
Trail (external link), also a National Cycle route.

-
Visitor Centre (free entry Mon-Fri 9am-5pm)

in combination with a district heating system.
-
A water strategy able to cut mains consumption
by a half using water saving appliances, rainwater collection
and recycling water through the ‘Living Machine’
sewerage treatment plant.
-
An excellent location for access both
to central London and to the more rural activities of
the surrounding area, including the North Downs, Box Hill
and other Surrey Hills attractions.
