The area is a haven for wildlife lovers and birdwatchers and you are in ideal walking country with plenty of low and high level routes.

  • Amazing Highland scenery.

  • Red deer country.
  • Other animals sighted: pinemartin, otters, red squirrel, golden eagles, capercaillie, ptarmigan, grouse and peregrine falcons.

  • A good level track runs around Loch Ossian (7 miles/11km) and makes for a fabulous day walk or mountain bike run.
  • Good Hill walking opportunities - walkers should be properly equipped and note that conditions can quickly become challenging in this remote area.
  • Trout and pike can be caught almost from the hostel door.

Your accommodation

Loch Ossian is arguably the most eco-friendly hostel in the UK. It has been awarded the Green Tourism Business Scheme Gold award and is based on its own lake high on Rannoch Moor, only accessible by foot from Corrour Station, a mile away.

  • The hostel has a three star hostel rating, providing comfortable yet basic accommodation.
  • Prices are based on 20 sharing the hostel, sleeping in two bunk rooms, each with 10 bunk beds.
  • Under-occupancy per person for 10 sharing hostel would be £20 extra per person.
  • No laundry and no bedding provided - bring your own sleeping bag.
  • A multi-fuel stove provides heat and hot water for washing.
  • Windows made from recycled floated glass.

Your destination

Loch Ossian is a small stretch of water at the heart of Rannoch Moor ringed by hills and mountains. A man-made island or crannog, dating from the Iron Age, has been constructed near the southern shore and there are many wooded areas and small shingle beaches to enjoy.

  • Rannoch Moor is one of the last remaining wildernesses of Europe.
  • Dotted with numerous lochs, lochans, peat bogs, and streams.
  • Home to a wealth of plant, insect, bird and animal life.
  • See exposed roots of old pine trees from the ancient Caledonian forest, thousands of years old.
  • West Highland Railway - crosses the moor, rises to over 1300 feet and travels over 23 miles of moorland.
  • Surrounded by mountains that rise to over 3000 feet to the south-east and the west, and to over 2000 feet in the north.
